There is quite a large body of work on the subject of being authentic, of honoring our own true identity. It’s the foundation of the personal development genre including several hundred articles here on The Good Men Project.

Think about these questions and then tell us your story!

  1. What have you noticed about yourself and the different roles you play in your life: Sibling, only child, spouse, never-married, parent, friend, loaner, empty-nester, Millenial, college grad, high school dropout, lawyer, physician, nurse, administrator, webmaster, plumber, carpenter . . .[what else?]
  2. How do society’s labels—gender, sex, IQ, physical appearance, etc.—affect your personal identity?
  3. Can you always be authentically yourself in different roles?
  4. How do you know when you are being authentic and when you are wearing a mask?
  5. How do you feel when your relationship nurtures your authentic self?
  6. How do these roles influence your personal identity?
  7. How are we like the adaptable chameleon, who takes on a different appearance in different environments, and does our flexibility mean we are performing a social expectation or just demonstrating another aspect of our authentic self?

Looking for Authenticity in All of the Wrong Places

In order for personal development to occur, we must recognize that we have room for growth, that there is a gap between what we are and what we could be.

Do You Sacrifice Your Authenticity in Your Roles?

What if you really want to travel or go on the road as a dancer or performer, rather than be a homemaker? Maybe you want to be a park ranger, but you and your family think that idea is crazy and that you should reside close to them in the city.

Live With Authenticity, Not Just Positivity

It’s unrealistic to be positive all the time, it’s better to stand within your own truth, no matter what that looks like.

Authenticity: The Most Powerful Skill for Every Relationship

And why it’s also the hardest.
